Autumn – Apple and Plum Crumble

Nights drawing in, falling leaves and crackling fires - with the comfort of a traditional British crumble, prepared and cooked in around 1 hour.  Delicious - and you can add creme fraiche or live yogurt for a little extra luxury. 




  • 3 - 4 cooking apples, peeled, cut into chunks
  • 50g/2oz dark brown sugar
  • 4 large ripe plums, stoned and cut into slices




  • 150g/5oz plain flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 90g/3¼ oz cold butter, cut into pieces
  • 75g/3oz soft brown sugar
  • 50g/2oz rolled oats 




  • Preheat over to 200 deg C/400 deg F/gas mark 6


  • Put apples into saucepan with sugar; cook over gentle heat for 5 – 6 minutes.  Add quartered plums and cook for one minute more


  • To make crumble topping, mix together flour and salt and rub in the butter with fingers until it resembles breadcrumbs


  • Stir in sugar and oats


  • Spoon fruit into fairly deep ovenproof dish


  • Cover with crumble mixture


  • Bake in oven for 30 minutes
